  • World-leading recycler provides Lower 9th Ward Homeownership Association and Water Wise Gulf South with $1,800 donation
  • Simple rain barrel system can help New Orleans’ residents cut flooding risk and access free water for gardening

EMR USA’s Southern Region are supporting the roll out of green infrastructure in New Orleans, partnering with the Lower 9th Ward Homeownership Association and Water Wise Gulf South as the two organizations host the city’s latest Rain Barrel Workshop event.

Residents in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward are being given the opportunity to construct their own rain barrels to take home as part of the scheme. The simple-but-effective system allows a homeowner to manage the rainwater that hits their roof – reducing the risk of flooding and providing a free source of water to keep plants healthy or to clean cars.

The Rain Barrel Workshop – Lower 9th Ward will take place on December 17, 2022, and families can make their own rain barrel during the event.

EMR USA – part of EMR – is a global leader in sustainable materials and is supporting the project with a $1,800 donation to provide rain barrels free of charge to the community. The company, which has sites located across the US Gulf Coast, is committed to supporting the neighborhoods where it operates with voluntary support and donations to worthy causes.

Tony Schultz, ESG (Environmental Social Governance) Manager at EMR Southern, said:

“I’m incredibly proud to put EMR’s support behind the Lower 9th Ward Homeownership Association’s and Water Wise Gulf South’s upcoming Rain Barrel Workshop. This simple and affordable piece of technology can make a huge difference to water management in our most at-risk communities.

“Like all New Orleans residents, EMR employees have first-hand experience of the impact that extreme weather and flooding can have on our great city. That is why we are investing in better water management on our sites and also in projects like this, which can safeguard the neighborhoods where we live and work.

“And, as part of EMR’s sustainability strategy, our company is tackling the root cause of our changing climate with an ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

“Our company’s values – We Care, We do – are not just about the way we run our business but also about the role we play in the communities where we operate. The latest Rain Barrel Workshop – made possible with support from EMR USA’s Southern Region will be a fitting example of that approach in action.”

Rain Barrel Workshop – Lower 9th Ward will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 1235 Deslonde Street, New Orleans LA 70117 between 10am and 2pm. It is open to residents of Lower 9th Ward only.
